As this dentist demonstrated, owning your own practice pays off. Everything extra comes to you. Save and invest that extra and you’ll be a multimillionaire. If you’ve been thinking about starting your own practice, check out these tips: https://www.whitecoatinvestor.com/medical-practice-startup/

By lowering out-of-pocket medication costs, GoodRx estimates it has helped patients get at least 78 million prescriptions they otherwise may not have been able to afford. Hand out GoodRx savings cards to your patients or recommend the GoodRx app, and you could be saving them up to 80% on prescriptions. Helping patients afford their prescriptions makes it more likely they will adhere to their treatment. GoodRx is accepted at over 70,000 U.S. pharmacy locations, no insurance needed, and all patients have to do is show the card or app to the pharmacist to save. Learn more at https://goodrx.com/WCI

Would the White Coat Investor exist if I had only interacted with good financial professionals, and not multiple ones that ripped us off and caused me to educate myself and take control of our finances? Probably not. https://www.whitecoatinvestor.com/about/ So we have that terrible advisor to thank for this podcast which is all about your questions. We discuss the future of home prices in the U.S. We talk about investing in actively managed funds, whether there is a time that is a good idea with stocks or bonds. One of the good guys in the financial services industry joins us to answer questions on whether you should use bitcoins hyper volatility to time the market and make more money and if social index fund investing is a good way to invest. Whatever your investing plan says to do, it must all start with a high savings rate. We recommend 20% and tell you why in this episode.

I estimate that 80% of doctors need, want, and should use a financial advisor and/or an investment manager. Some investment gurus such as Dr. William Bernstein think my estimate is way too low. At any rate, if you want to use an advisor temporarily or for your entire life, there is no reason to feel guilty about it—just make sure you are getting good advice at a fair price. If you need help updating your financial plan or just getting one in place, check out our list of recommended financial advisors at https://www.whitecoatinvestor.com/financial-advisors. You can do this and The White Coat Investor can help.

A defined benefit cash balance plan https://www.whitecoatinvestor.com/cash-balance-plans-another-retirement-plan-for-professionals/ is a somewhat unusual and surprisingly physician specific retirement account. It is a type of a defined benefit plan. On one end you have a defined contribution plan like a 401(k) and on the other a defined benefit plan or pension plan. A cash balance pension, a subtype of defined benefit plan lies as kind of a hybrid between the two. It still falls in the category as a defined benefit plan, but it's purpose is designed not so that you have an annual income distribution after you retire but that you take the lump sum. Confused? Don't worry, we have Victor Mangona, who has developed an expertise in these plans, as our guest this episode. We discuss who should consider a cash balance plan, how much money can be put into a plan, the tax savings from using this plan, how to invest these assets, what happens if there is a loss in the account, and most importantly how to get your practice to adopt a cash balance plan so you can take advantage of these great accounts.

Get out your car insurance policy and let's go over it to make sure you have the important things covered. Do you need comprehensive or just collision coverage? How much coverage do you need for bodily injury liability? What options should you pass on? How does your umbrella policy work with you car insurance policy? Most doctors should have an umbrella policy in a seven-figure amount. 80% of umbrella claims are auto-related. To get an umbrella policy you will be required to carry certain limits in car insurance. We dive into all these details in this episode to make certain you are appropriately insured to protect your finances.

Like other episodes, after this deep dive, we answer listener questions about liquidating your brokerage account, HSAs, calculating your net worth as a practice owner, and whether practice owners need disability insurance.

Getting quality disability and life insurance should be the first financial chore for a doctor to complete. Most docs don't have the ideal policy for their gender, specialty, state, or health status and 1 in 7 doctors get disabled at some point during their career. Because these policies can only be purchased through brokers, we have put together a list of vetted agents who are experienced with working with the specific needs of medical professionals and who have your best interest at heart. If you have questions about insurance and what kind of policies would be the best fit for you, check out our insurance recommended list at https://www.whitecoatinvestor.com/insurance and feel the peace of mind that comes with knowing you have the optimal policy in place. You can do this and The White Coat Investor can help.

James Lange is a nationally recognized IRA, a 401(k) and retirement plan distribution expert, and the president and founder of the Roth IRA Institute, which helps financial professionals and IRA and retirement plan owners to get the most from their retirement plans using Roth IRA conversions as an integral part of the planning strategy. More importantly, his ideas have affected my own thinking about investing, particularly the use of retirement accounts. In this interview we discuss all these things as well as his recent book, Beating the New Death Tax, which he is giving away to WCI listeners. I really like his writing. He is not afraid to get into the weeds and give hard recommendations. So many books out there are so full of fluff. His are not. If you're into the details, this is an episode you will enjoy. At some point in our financial lives, it will be time to buy a home. A physician mortgage can be a good vehicle for a young doctor who’s just out of school and has a more effective place to use their money than on a big down payment. These loans allow doctors to secure a mortgage with fewer restrictions and a lower down payment than a conventional mortgage. But if you’re further advanced in your career or deeper into your journey to financial freedom, buying a home with a conventional mortgage and then, later on, potentially refinancing that loan to a better rate with a shorter time frame could be a great move. Wherever you are in your financial journey, make sure you use the mortgage that will be most financially beneficial for you. Hop over to our recommended tab to learn more about all of your mortgage and refinancing options at https://www.whitecoatinvestor.com/mortgage. You can do this and The White Coat Investor can help.

Of course taking advantage of geographical arbitrage really helps with that. https://www.whitecoatinvestor.com/geographic-arbitrage-pof/

The point of residency is to learn how to be a good doctor. It's not to try to get rich. But for new residents there are a few financial chores you need to take care of during residency. Don't drop the ball on these. Get in the habit of saving something each month from your paycheck, know where your money is going, and make sure you have critical insurance in place. We discuss these chores in more detail in this episode.

For our non resident listeners we also answer some of your questions about mega backdoor Roth IRAs, DFA ETFs vs Vanguard ETFs, getting rid of your whole life insurance policy, everyone's favorite tax form - form 8606, and cash balance plans.

Becoming a new attending is a complicated time in your financial life. That first year out of training is probably the most important year of your financial life. What you do with your financial life in that first year, can predict the next 30 or 40 years of your financial life with surprising accuracy. In this episode we go over the financial priorities of a new attending, what you should be focusing on and in what order, from insurance and student loans to retirement accounts and mortgages. For those who don't fall into this category we answer listener questions about asset allocations for 529 accounts, having multiple 401k(s), benefits of a side gig as a business owner, improving your cyber security and avoiding identity theft, and if the pandemic continues to affect the income recertification for IDR.
