In 1998, Bill Schultheis wrote a simple investment book for people who felt overwhelmed by the market. The Coffeehouse Investor inspires readers to follow a low stress way to financial security. Long before the White Coat Investor, Bill was preaching that when you simplify your investments, you end up getting better returns. This gives you more time for family, friends, and other pursuits. The Coffeehouse Investor philosophy is essentially getting your money taken care of so you can focus on living. In this interview we talk a lot about the importance of creating balance in your life and keeping money in a healthy perspective. We don't live to make money. Money is to pay for the life we want to live. If you are finding your life a little unbalanced right now, this episode will help get you straightened out. https://www.whitecoatinvestor.com/how-to-be-a-coffeehouse-investor-with-bill-schultheis

Getting quality disability and life insurance should be the first financial chore for a doctor to complete. Most docs don't have the ideal policy for their gender, specialty, state, or health status and 1 in 7 doctors get disabled at some point during their career. Because these policies can only be purchased through brokers, we have put together a list of vetted agents who are experienced with working with the specific needs of medical professionals and who have your best interest at heart. If you have questions about insurance and what kind of policies would be the best fit for you, check out our insurance recommended list at https://www.whitecoatinvestor.com/insurance and feel the peace of mind that comes with knowing you have the optimal policy in place. You can do this and The White Coat Investor can help.

In this episode we celebrate Casey achieving financial independence relatively early on a military salary that ranged from $75-260K/year. He has a $1.5 million net worth plus a pension providing $80K/year starting at the age of 48. Not a typical FI story with a spending budget of $130K/year but with a family of 7 Casey can FIRE at age 48. He makes a good case for sticking it out for 20 years with the military! Feeling like you are late to starting your retirement savings is a common sentiment. People are not generally as far behind as they think. Second career doctors have already taken care of some things that a doctor just coming out of residency has not, like owning a car, home, and raising children. Your highest earnings of your career are typically in your 50s. So, when you are earning more, it's easier to save more. This episode will help a later saver know what to prioritize and to understand some of the benefits of their age. The truth is that no doctor is ever really more than 10 years away from financial independence. You can do this and we can help. https://www.whitecoatinvestor.com/behind-in-the-retirement-savings-game/

I estimate that 80% of doctors need, want, and should use a financial advisor and/or an investment manager. Some investment gurus such as Dr. William Bernstein think my estimate is way too low. At any rate, if you want to use an advisor temporarily or for your entire life, there is no reason to feel guilty about it—just make sure you are getting good advice at a fair price. If you need help updating your financial plan or just getting one in place, check out our list of recommended financial advisors at https://www.whitecoatinvestor.com/financial-advisors. You can do this and The White Coat Investor can help.

For FIRE week on the White Coat Investor podcast, we have a guest host, Physician on Fire https://www.physicianonfire.com/credit-cards/ , discussing travel hacking and answering listener questions. You can earn free travel and he shows you how with regular spending and credit card welcome bonuses. Now credit cards are for convenience and only use them if you are disciplined enough to pay them off every month. Use autopay for all your cards and make sure you are getting at least 1.5% to 2% back on your everyday purchases. If you’re willing to pick up a new card a couple of times a year, and maybe cancel a card or two if you don’t think a card is worth the annual fee, you can get a LOT more bang for your buck by taking advantage of welcome bonuses. Let Leif show you how in this episode.

He also answers many questions about bonds and their role in your portfolio, as well as maximizing the 199A deduction, turnover rates in index funds, and understanding your taxes on side income.
