This doc recently retired after a 40 year career that he loved with a nearly $50 million portfolio. He has been living and preaching the WCI methodology long before WCI existed. He tells us part of his secret to success is to choose where you live wisely and own your own business. He said owning his own surgery center made a massive difference to his happiness and his wealth because he got to control the way the practice was run, how efficient it was, who worked there etc. He is a testament of what can happen if you live below your means and invest wisely. He wants us all to remember to find joy in all stages of life and not just live for retirement. After the interview we will be talking about estate taxes for finance 101.

Today we are talking about what your options are if you do not match this week. It can be one of the hardest things to face and knowing what your options are and what steps to take next can help ease the difficultly just a bit. We also spend some time telling you about the results of our annual survey. The survey is a huge part of how we decide what changes to make here at WCI. Finally we tackle a few of your questions about annuities, if you should ever invest with a family friend and where to put some extra moonlighting money as a resident.

Today we talk with a nurse who is currently in school to become a CRNA and is officially a millionaire. Roughly 10 years ago he and his wife took control of their finances. He said there was some tough conversations as they educated themselves about how to become financially literate and what their goals should be and how to reach them. But once they were on the same page they were able to start crushing their goals. Their big goal was to be millionaires by 40 and they got there a few years early. He is now passionate about giving back both financially and educating coworkers about how to get started with taking control of their financial life. After the interview Dr. Dahle gives his thoughts on how to get started for finance 101.

We estimate that 80% of doctors need, want, and should use a financial advisor and/or an investment manager. Some investment gurus such as Dr. William Bernstein think my estimate is way too low. At any rate, if you want to use an advisor temporarily or for your entire life, there is no reason to feel guilty about it—just make sure you are getting good advice at a fair price. If you need help updating your financial plan or just getting one in place, check out our list of recommended financial advisors at https://whitecoatinvestor.com/financial-advisors.

This dermatologist paid off his student loans and built his net worth to $150K just one year out of training. Not only did he accomplish all of that but has started the process of creating his own practice after learning that the clinic he worked at was selling to private equity. He shared his thoughts about the impact of private equity on young doctors and the challenge of learning how to build a practice as you go. Stick around after the interview for a discussion about physician mortgages for Finance 101.

At some point in our financial lives, it will be time to buy a home. A physician mortgage can be a good vehicle for a young doctor who’s just out of school and has a more effective place to use their money than on a big down payment. These loans allow doctors to secure a mortgage with fewer restrictions and a lower down payment than a conventional mortgage. But if you’re further advanced in your career or deeper into your journey to financial freedom, buying a home with a conventional mortgage and then, later on, potentially refinancing that loan to a better rate with a shorter time frame could be a great move. Wherever you are in your financial journey, make sure you use the mortgage that will be most financially beneficial for you. Hop over to our recommended tab to learn more about all of your mortgage and refinancing options at https://whitecoatinvestor.com/mortgage.
